Most drivers have been on roads where the shoulder is not level with the road pavement, or perhaps a work zone on which parts of the same road are at different levels. These are known as pavement edge drop-offs and can put you in a dangerous situation if you don't know how to react.
Fortunately, compared to other types of crashes, edge drop-off crashes are relatively rare. However, when they do happen they can be catastrophic. Knowing what to do and how to recover safely can make a world of difference.
If you go off the edge of the pavement, don't panic. Slow down, and don't attempt to immediately steer back onto the pavement, but make a gradual re-entry.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has provided research and recommendations to transportation agencies for expansion of paved shoulders, wherever feasible; enhanced monitoring of edge conditions; incorporation of new construction practices when roads are resurfaced; and increased education for state maintenance employees.
