Folklorico! Ranchero! It's time once again to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Many people incorrectly believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican independence day-it's actually the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, won in 1862 when an outnumbered Mexican force defeated an invading French army. For most participants today, it's a time to celebrate Hispanic-American heritage and culture.
Denver: Denver's Civic Center Park is the location of the USA's largest two-day Cinco de Mayo fiesta. It is also one of the largest cultural events in Colorado, with more than 400,000 visitors expected this year. This festival features live local, national and international entertainment, more than 350 exhibitors and vendors, a kids' area and great food. May 5-6. 303-534-8342, www.newsed.org/cinco.htm
Chandler, AZ: Locals here celebrate Cinco in a slightly different way-with chihuahua races. Owners encourage their dogs to come to them from the other end of a 50-foot lane, with variable and often hilarious results. The crowning of a King and Queen chihuahua tops off the festival. May 5. 480-895-0440.
Austin, TX: This city, which promotes itself as the "Live Music Capital of the World," celebrates with a major music festival. Events also include a jalapeņo-eating contest and carnival attractions. May 3-6. The month of May is designated as Latino Music Month throughout the city. 512-867-1999, www.austincincodemayo.com.
