A teen's first car

Know AAA

Buying a car is an important decision, especially for a teenager with limited driving experience and a limited budget. What most new drivers need is affordable, safe and reliable transportation.

Affordability

Research insurance costs for your chosen vehicle before you buy—remember that if you finance a vehicle, the lending institution may insist on comprehensive insurance. Your local AAA insurance agent can help you and your teen decide between the many insurance options available.

When buying a used car, consider whether a very cheap car will end up costing more in the long run if it's in bad condition. Many auto manufacturers now have certification programs for used cars. Whether buying new or used, investigate the market first so you don't pay too much.

Safety

Invest in as many safety features as you can afford-front and side airbags, antilock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control, height-adjustable shoulder belts and tires that are in good condition.

Select a vehicle that speaks of responsibility. Avoid sports models or high-performance cars that are tempting to drive recklessly or too fast. Minimize distracting options such as sound systems. Choose a model with familiar handling characteristics—nothing too different from cars the new driver has driven before. When driving an unfamiliar vehicle, the risk of crashing goes up about 25%.

Reliability

Check the car's history of ownership, maintenance and crash repairs through a service such as Carfax. Before purchase, have a certified inspection facility ensure the car is mechanically sound with safety components that are operational. See locations of AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities.

AAA AutoSource is a car buying service that can take a lot of the hassle out of finding the right car.
