The allure of an all-inclusive resort is strong for vacationers trying to get the most bang for their buck. But what, exactly, does "all-inclusive" mean? The definition is as varied as the resorts themselves. In general, it means you get accommodation, meals, drinks and a variety of sports activities.
Meals: In some cases, this means exactly what it implies—all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and theme parties. What's available at a particular resort could range from one buffet to multiple restaurants.
Drinks: The all-inclusive drinks list usually covers soda and domestic wines and beers. Some properties include mixed drinks.
Sports: Many beach resorts limit their included sports to non-motorized water activities. Scuba equipment may or may not be included.
Other items: Some properties offer additional inclusions if you book for a certain duration, or during certain times of the year. Examples include vouchers for spa treatments, complimentary rental cars and other perks.
Going all-inclusive will be most cost-effective for those who intend to spend all or most of their vacation time at the resort. Make sure you know all the details of what's included before booking—being prepared means no unpleasant surprises.
