A Colorado GEM
Pike National Forest
AAA TourBooks include a listing of points of interest around the state that offer a Great Experience for Members: exceptional places for your list of "things to do." GEMs are chosen solely on merit-an attraction or destination can't apply for GEM status.
Colorado has 28 GEMs and a different one will be featured in each issue. Pike National Forest's proximity to the Denver-Colorado Springs corridor makes it one of the most heavily used national forests in Colorado. It has many developed campgrounds and ample opportunities for fishing, hunting, hiking and winter sports. Scenic drives include the Rampart Range Road and the Pikes Peak Highway. Lost Creek and Mount Evans Wildernesses are accessible only by foot or horseback.
The 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak can be reached by highway or cog railway; hikers can climb the 11.7-mile Barr National Recreation Trail. The 1.3 mile hiking trail to the Devil's Head Lookout Tower in the Rampart Range is another interesting excursion.
