President's Message

AAA Colorado's traffic safety partners

Tony DeNovellis
President and CEO

Ever since its beginning more than 100 years ago, AAA has been dedicated to traffic safety for all motorists and pedestrians. Nationally, highlights of this commitment have included helping with the development of America's interstate highway system, and support for now—standard auto safety items such as rearview mirrors and seat belts.

Closer to home, AAA Colorado is proud to have helped bring about the graduated drivers' licensing system (GDL), which aids our youngest drivers during their most challenging first year of driving. AAA Colorado remains dedicated to traffic safety and is currently supporting expansion of the Move Over law (see page 10 for details).

Any success in this vital arena, however, is due in large part to the coalitions AAA Colorado has been a part of, and the traffic safety partners it has teamed up with over the years. Without them, much less would have been accomplished.

Two recent examples of coalitions that AAA Colorado participates in:

  • The Teen Driving Coalition - Dedicated to bringing graduated drivers' licensing to Colorado, this group includes the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA), the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, the Caitlyn Craig Foundation and many more.

  • The Colorado Safety Belt Coalition - Dedicated to increasing the enforcement of the existing seat belt law. Comprised of a wide variety of agencies, corporations and individuals, the coalition includes RMIIA; the Colorado State Patrol; CDOT; Colorado chiefs of police and other law enforcement interests; representatives of the insurance, automobile and health care industries; Children's, Craig, Exempla and other local hospitals; and organizations such as MADD, the Brain Injury Association and the Trucking Industry Association.

Additionally, AAA Colorado's traffic safety specialist actively participates in numerous safety coalitions, including SafeKids Metro Denver, the Teen Motor Vehicle Alliance and the City of Arvada Mature Driving Task Force.

I want to take this moment to thank these individuals and agencies, and all the others who have worked so hard for traffic safety during the past few years. I also want to acknowledge three organizations that have consistently gone above and beyond everyday efforts for the safety of all motorists and pedestrians—the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. Together, we can make a difference in traffic safety.
