Vacation costs by state

According to AAA's annual domestic vacation costs survey, the average daily cost of food and lodging for a family of four was $269 this year. The average cost increased 3.7% since last year.

The most expensive state for vacationers in 2007 remained Hawaii, where the average daily cost for a family of four was $650. Other destinations with a high average daily cost were the District of Columbia ($611), Rhode Island ($345), New York ($326) and New Jersey ($324).

Travelers looking for bargains can head to North Dakota, 2007's most economical vacation state at an average daily cost of $187. Other low-cost states were Nebraska ($199), Iowa and Kansas (both $201), and South Dakota ($204).

AAA has been tracking vacation costs since 1950, when the average daily cost for a family of four (two adults and two children) was $13. Costs are based on prices from more than 60,000 AAA Approved and Diamond-rated lodgings and restaurants listed in AAA TourBooks.
