A Colorado GEM - The U.S. Mint

AAA TourBooks include a listing of points of interest around the state that offer a Great Experience for Members: exceptional places for your list of "things to do." GEMs are chosen solely on merit—an attraction or destination can't apply for GEM status.

Colorado has 28 GEMs and a different one will be featured in each issue.

The U.S. Mint in Denver produces more than 40 million coins each day. Built 1898-1904, the building reflects the grandeur of that time with murals, chandeliers and marble. Tours cover the history of the Mint and present-day coin manufacture. Visitors can watch coins being struck in presses that operate around the clock.

Tours are free, but must be reserved in advance. Allow one hour minimum. Bring only a palm-sized wallet—the Mint is a high-security facility and most other items are not allowed. Storage is not available. The tour is wheelchair-accessible and sign language interpreters are available by arrangement.
