Bavarian markets

About 20 years ago, experienced travelers to Europe began to discover a way to enjoy the holidays and shop for gifts at the same time—by visiting the Bavarian Christmas markets. A tradition in Europe for centuries, the first Christmas market was supposedly held in Dresden, Germany, in 1434.

Markets run from the first Sunday after Nov. 26 until Christmas Eve, and allow the visitor to experience Europe in one of its most intimate and authentic expressions. Wooden stalls in the town square, strung with pine branches and lanterns, are accentuated by the sounds of traditional music, Christmas plays, and steaming cups of hot Gluhwein (mulled wine) and cider.
