Top trends for 2008

As 2007 winds down, it's time to survey the travel landscape for the coming year. Following are AAA's travel predictions for 2008.

Italy will continue to be popular. Italy has been one of Europe's top draws for U.S. travelers in recent years, and its popularity shows no sign of waning. France and Spain are also increasing in popularity.

More cruisers will be heading to Europe. Sales of Caribbean cruises were flat last year while Mediterranean cruises were selling out. European river cruising is one of the fastest-growing categories in travel today-and watch for more cruise choices in the Med on both large and small ships.

More travel to exotic destinations. The current generation of Americans is the most well-traveled in history, and many have already visited classic destinations like Rome, Paris and London. They're looking for something more, and increasingly they're finding it in places like Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat and Petra.

More world travel for families. This trend toward adventure travel includes parents, who are spending more than ever to provide even very young children with enriching travel experiences. You'll continue to see more family travel options in far-off places, from Australia to Africa to the Galapagos Islands.

For both domestic and international travel, the peak booking months are around the corner. The travel industry is booming at the moment and the most popular cruises, tours and hotels are likely to sell out early. Planning ahead and booking early in the year is the best way to guarantee that you'll enjoy the best vacation in 2008.
