Myths about travel insurance

There are many misconceptions about travel insurance. Here are some common ones, along with the facts:

Myth 1: "I don't need it. My regular insurance will cover any problems."
Most regular insurance policies have limited coverage for travel. In addition, there are situations in which your existing health insurance may not apply in a different state or country. Medicare also only applies within the USA.

Myth 2: "I already booked. It's too late to get it now!"
If you already booked your trip, you can still obtain travel insurance through any travel agent, whether you booked that way or not.

Myth 3: "It's just for medical emergencies."
Travel insurance also covers a wide range of other problems. For example, if you miss a connecting flight or cruise departure, some plans cover hotel costs and other expenses caused by the delay. Lost, damaged or stolen baggage may be covered throughout a trip. If a snowstorm or car problems make it impossible to get to the airport at all, travel insurance may cover a cancelled trip.

Insurance plans vary—check with a travel agent to ensure that any unexpected problems won't mean money down the drain.
