Getting sick is never fun, but it can really put a damper on things when you're traveling. Take a few minutes to prepare for emergency situations before leaving home.
The first rule of thumb is to never leave without your health insurance card—even for a short trip.
Make a list of medical information that includes any chronic conditions and/or allergies you may have; the name, address and phone number of your primary physician; and a list of medications you're taking (including dosage and frequency). Put this in your wallet or purse so it's with you at all times.
Carry medication in its original container, with extra prescriptions if you'll be traveling for an extended period of time.
If you need a doctor for a non-emergency situation while traveling, your best bet is to start by calling your health insurance provider, who can direct you to a local care provider and advise you about your coverage. There's usually an 800 number on your insurance card. Keep in mind that not all health insurance covers medical care away from home, unless it's an emergency—and there may be strict guidelines about what constitutes one.
Consider buying short-term travel insurance to fill any coverage gaps in your own healthcare policy. Travel insurance is usually inexpensive and can be purchased through any travel agent.
