INSURANCE—Should a travel trailer, pop-up trailer, fifth wheel or slide-in camper be added to an existing auto policy or insured with a separate RV policy? The answer depends on a number of factors:
If it's an inexpensive unit that will be used infrequently for hauling, or for an occasional weekend jaunt to the mountains, adding it to an auto policy makes sense. The liability coverage from the towing vehicle is automatically extended to any non-motorized unit being towed. The cost of adding comprehensive and collision coverage to an inexpensive camper/trailer is minimal, based on the stated value of the unit.
On the other hand, if it's a brand-new upscale model with all the extras, to be used for a month-long journey, a separate insurance policy is better. There are coverages available that offer additional protection in those circumstances.
Either way, insurance coverage for a travel trailer means peace of mind when heading out on vacation this summer. Talk to your insurance agent to make sure you have the right amount and type of coverage for your needs.
