TRAVEL—When traveling overseas, it's a good idea to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). The permit contains your name, photo and other important information translated into 10 languages, and is recognized as an official form of ID in more than 150 countries.

In the United States, AAA is one of only two entities authorized by the government to issue IDPs. (The other is the American Auto Touring Alliance.) Beware of fraudulent companies that claim to sell IDPs online, usually at exhorbitant prices.

A genuine IDP costs $15 and can be issued at any AAA office by filling out an application form. The only other requirements are a valid U.S. driver's license and two passport photos, which can be taken on the spot for a small additional cost.
