Packing for a cruise

One of the best things about cruising is unpacking once and not touching your luggage again till the end of the trip. But one of the worst mistakes cruisers make is over-packing.

Check with your cruise line for a suggested packing list tailored to your trip. Then consider the activities you expect to do. A romantic cruise might call for more evening wear; an Alaskan cruise might demand hiking boots and raingear.

Pack lightweight fabrics and plan on layering. Evenings can be chilly on deck even on a warm-destination cruise.

Bring double-duty clothing and things you can wear more than once. Do you really think anyone will notice if you wear the same dress shoes twice? A black evening skirt or pants can pair with different tops for a completely different look. A suit can be broken up with a sports coat and a different pair of pants to create three outfits. Wear them each twice and you're covered.

Pack sample-size toiletries you can toss when finished, especially if it's an item you only need once or twice during the trip.

Finally, if your cruise takes you outside U.S. waters—and chances are it does—be sure to pack your passport.
