Battery briefing

AUTOMOTIVE—Batteries can fail when you least expect it, and there are three primary reasons why they lose power. Summer heat can be a major factor.

  • Corrosion can affect battery posts or terminals, causing charging and discharging problems.
  • Sulfating is corrosion of the battery plates. It typically occurs when the car has not been used or has a bad alternator.
  • Water loss is caused by a lack of preventive maintenance, high temperatures under the hood, or overcharging due to a faulty alternator.

Depending upon usage and climate, the life span of a battery can range from 12 to 48 months. Preventive maintenance can help sustain the lifetime of a battery.

Despite what many motorists think, a discharged battery is not a "dead" battery. A recharge might be all that's necessary.

AAA Colorado initiated mobile battery service in 2000 with a fleet of specialist vans to provide diagnostic battery testing, delivery and installation of new batteries and removal of spent batteries for proper recycling. The mobile battery program is currently available in most Front Range locations. Call 800-AAA-HELP or click on "Automotive" at www.AAA.com.
