Know AAA
Get ready for summer
AUTOMOTIVE—During June, July and August, more than 7.4 million motorists will call AAA for help because they have run out of fuel, locked themselves out of the car, had a flat tire or some other issue. For optimum vehicle performance, inspect the following items before taking a summer road trip:
- Check the level and condition of the motor oil.
- With the automatic transmission warm and the engine idling in park, check the transmission fluid level. Add fluid if needed, but do not overfill.
- Make sure the battery terminals and cables are securely attached and free of corrosion. If you take the vehicle to a repair facility, have them test the battery and charging system as well.
- Check the antifreeze/coolant level and top up with a 50/50 mix of water and the relevant product.
- Visually inspect rubber hoses and drive belts for cracks, fraying or bulging, and look for leaks around hose clamps. Replace if necessary. Make sure belts with automatic tensioners are properly tightened, with no more than one-half inch of play when depressed between the pulleys.
- If the brake fluid level is near or below the minimum mark on the reservoir, have the brakes inspected for wear and fluid leaks.
- Check tire pressure (including the spare) and look for sidewall bulges and excessive or uneven tread wear. This includes boat and travel trailer tires also, which are often overlooked.
- Check that all lights and turn signals are working properly.
- Check with your service facility to determine if you need your fuel filter changed or your fuel system serviced. Most vehicles have fuel filters that need to be replaced periodically.
A little time and effort spent in preparing your vehicle for travel can go a long way in making your vacation trouble-free.
