INSURANCE—Each year, about 1,200 tornados touch down in the United States. The Insurance Information Institute offers the following tips for dealing with a tornado.
A tornado watch means tornados are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms. Move cars inside a garage or carport to avoid damage from hail, which often accompanies tornados. Keep your car keys and house keys with you at all times. Watch the sky and stay tuned to the radio or television for information.
A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.
Do not try to outrun a tornado. At home or work, go to the basement or lowest level and take shelter in the central part of the building, away from windows. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level, away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Do not open windows. People living in mobile homes should seek shelter elsewhere.
If you are in your car, leave your vehicle and seek shelter in the nearest ditch if no building is nearby. Do not shelter under a bridge or overpass. You are safer in a low, flat location.
Prepare a detailed inventory of all damaged or destroyed personal property. Take photographs if it is safe to access the area.
Make whatever temporary repairs you can to prevent further damage. Save receipts for any supplies and materials you purchase for repairs. If your home is severely damaged and you need to find other accommodations, save the receipts for hotel and food expenses too. Your insurance may provide reimbursement.
Secure a detailed estimate for permanent repairs to your home or business from a licensed contractor and give it to the insurance adjuster. The estimate should contain a description of the proposed repairs, costs and replacement prices.
