Continental Divide Trail turns 30

The Continental Divide Trail, a hiking trail that will eventually extend 3,100 miles through five states (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico), was designated by Congress in 1978. The trail is now 67% complete.

Since 1995, more than 9,500 summer volunteers have helped build the trail, construct bridges and trailheads, and repair eroded sections.

This year more than 50 volunteer projects are planned, ranging from work sites with nearby car camping to remote backcountry locations. No experience is necessary and some projects are suitable for families with children 10 years of age and older.

Projects are available in all five Continental Divide Trail states. Colorado project locations this summer will include the Collegiate Peaks area.
