Arizona is a state of astounding diversity. The Grand Canyon cuts through more than 275 miles of rock, serving as a backdrop to dramatic mountains, the luminous red rocks of Sedona, ranches and historic Old West towns. In stark contrast to Arizona's unique landscape, modern cities rise out of the cactus-studded desert.
Phoenix—the essence of the Southwest
Phoenix is the unofficial capital of the American Southwest. Rock climbers and hikers flock to Camelback Mountain, scaling the 200-foot red cliffs or taking in the views from a scenic drive at South Mountain Park that slowly climbs to the summit.
Rafting, fishing or canoeing is popular on Phoenix's rivers and lakes. The city's Desert Botanical Gardens present its colorful, vibrant side with 20,000 blooming flowers and plants, including 1,300 cacti. Perhaps the ultimate desert experience is golfing amid the Sonoran Desert scenery.
Tucson—Cultural capital
Tucson sits in a valley surrounded by four striking mountain ranges. The Santa Catalina Mountains, with their cooler air, offer 150 miles of scenic hiking trails from cactus-lined passes to pine forests, and the Sabino Canyon features clear, swimmable pools. Nearby Mount Lemmon is a popular ski area in winter.
Tucson has a vibrant artistic community and youthful culture. The Mission San Xavier del Bac is a premier example of Spanish mission-style architecture. Tucson's Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is also a zoo with an extensive collection of desert animals, and the popular Kitt Peak National Observatory is the largest of its kind in the world.
Scottsdale—Fun in the sun
Scottsdale is best known for its many golf courses and spas, situated in every landscape setting from desert to mountainside. For a little culture, visit Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's school of design that is an architectural wonder in and of itself. Families can watch a horse show at WestWorld Equestrian Center, or enjoy a balloon ride over the desert.
