Roses in Palisade

Where can garden lovers visit the largest single planting of Old English roses in North America? Starting this summer, the answer is Palisade, Colorado.

The newly opened Varaison Rose Garden consists of a mass planting of 1,400 Old English roses in a scaled reproduction of Nyman's Garden in East Sussex, England. The two-year-old roses will be in bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall months. Tours of the garden are free to the public.

The garden is part of Varaison Vineyards and Winery, located at 405 W. First Street in Palisade, and was designed with the help of Michael Marriott of David Austin Roses. Old English roses were developed in the 1950s to combine the forms and fragrances of old roses with the wider color range of modern roses.
