RVers follow horse race

At the end of August, the second annual Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race will begin. The 515-mile, 14-day equestrian endurance event is expected to have more than 50 riders participating. Four countries and 21 states were represented in last year's race, with foreign entries from England, Belgium and Canada.

The race makes an unusual spectator sport for the campers and RVers who follow the riders from New Mexico to Kansas. This year, race organizers have compiled an itinerary of stops for RVers who want to take part, and RV camping for spectators will be available in the ten race villages where horses and riders stop for the night.

RVers can also volunteer to take a more active role as water distributors, traffic controllers or timing the riders in and out of vet checks and overnight stops. The race starts in Wagon Mound, N.M. on August 31 and finishes in Council Grove, Kan. on Sept. 13. More information can be found at www.sfthorserace.com.
