Back-to-school safety

Fall is a good time for parents to conduct a back-to-school safety check.

  • Young children can grow quickly—do you have the right car seat system for their height and weight?
  • Remind kids to look "left, right, left," before crossing a street and to check for turning cars. Teach them to walk with groups and stay on the sidewalk.
  • Check bikes to ensure that the brakes work, the seat and pedals are correctly adjusted for the child's height, and that the chain, gears and tires are in good condition. Don't forget the helmet!
  • Remind kids to stay seated on buses and obey the driver's instructions. Teach them to check for cars before they step off a bus—especially if they take public transportation, rather than school buses that stop traffic to offload kids.
  • When sharing rides with other families, teach kids to fasten their seatbelts even if the driver forgets to remind them.
