Move Over Law expands

For several years, Colorado law has required motorists to slow down or move over for police, ambulance and fire vehicles stopped at the roadside. The law was recently expanded to include road repair trucks and roadside assistance vehicles.

The expanded "Slow Down, Move Over" law is easy to understand:

  • Motorists must move over one lane before passing any stationary or slow-moving emergency, roadside assistance or road repair vehicle with its emergency lights flashing.
  • If an adjacent lane is not available, motorists are required to slow to a safe speed and provide adequate distance before passing.
  • Vehicles traveling at highway speeds pose a deadly threat to people working on the side of the highway, and often pass within a couple of feet. Speeding vehicles kill or injure road construction workers, emergency services personnel and roadside assistance personnel every year.

Please slow down and move over for vehicles stopped beside the road—it's not just common sense, it's the law.
