Transportation is key to economic strength

The question of how to revitalize Colorado's aging roads and other transportation infrastructure is a problem that won't go away.

There is no easy answer, but state government is keenly aware that an answer is needed—and soon. Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., has contributed the message below to inform AAA Colorado members of what is being done.

Please read the Commentary for some sobering facts and figures on Colorado's transportation system. AAA Colorado thanks all those who have put their time and energy into finding a solution for the transportation funding crisis.

From Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr.:

Without question, the biggest issue for America today is our economy. We are facing unprecedented challenges in our housing, credit and job markets, and it will take all of us working together to overcome these obstacles.

Colorado's economy depends heavily on a modern, efficient and safe transportation system. Unfortunately, Colorado—like many states—does not have the funds for the infrastructure investments necessary to repair and replace deficient bridges and roadways, let alone build a 21st century transportation network that incorporates modern modes of transportation like light rail and regional transit.

In the spring of 2007, I convened a Blue Ribbon Transportation Finance and Implementation Panel to evaluate current transportation spending practices and priorities, and explore long-term sustainable funding options for the future.

Over the past 18 months, the panel has held dozens of meetings all around Colorado. Thousands of Coloradans have participated in this process. The panel has done an outstanding job informing the public about what it has called a "quiet crisis" in transportation funding.

The investments made in our transportation system 50 years ago allowed Colorado to become the mobile and prosperous state it is today. We are a leader in tourism and energy and we have enjoyed having cheaper products, higher wages, recreational and educational opportunity—all linked in some way to our transportation system.

We can no longer afford to take for granted the very things that have made our way of life possible.

At such a challenging time for our economy, the most effective thing Colorado can do is make strategic investments toward improving our infrastructure. A well-planned, dependable, efficient transportation system will help stimulate our economy, create jobs and allow Colorado to thrive.

While there are many different ideas being discussed about how best to make this investment, one thing is certain—an investment in our state's transportation infrastructure will have an immediate and long-lasting effect on our economy.
