Idaho Springs anniversary

In 2009, Idaho Springs will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Colorado Gold Rush with events throughout the year. The town, less than an hour from Denver along I-70, was the location of the state's first gold strike.

The anniversary celebrations begin on January 7 with a ceremony at Jackson Monument, which marks the spot where George A. Jackson discovered gold on that date in 1859. On January 10 a new exhibit will be unveiled at the town's Heritage Museum, and the entire month of February will bring chances for visitors to win a draw for real gold, with tickets available from participating Idaho Springs merchants. Concerts, art shows, commemorative postmarks and more are planned.
