Regular or premium?

Your article entitled "Regular or Premium" [July/August 09] does not tell the whole story about octane ratings. It is quite misleading for drivers in Colorado.

Octane requirements for all gasoline engines depend on atmosphere pressure. As the atmosphere pressure goes down, the antiknock octane requirements go down for any particular engine. Here in Colorado our altitude is significantly higher than most of the country and thus the atmosphere pressure is lower. This is why regular gasoline in Colorado is at 85 octane while, in most of the country, regular is at 87 octane.

Except for super, super high-performance cars, 85 or at most 87 octane is adequate here in Colorado.

The largest lake

In your July/August edition, on page 62, you have McPhee Lake near Dolores listed as the second largest natural lake in Colorado. This is incorrect. True, it may be the second largest lake but not natural lake. That honor goes to Big Creek Lake near Walden. Grand Lake is the largest natural lake at 500 surface acres and Big Creek Lake comes in at 340 surface acres.

Survey results: online or paper?

We were overwhelmed with responses to the survey in the July/August issue asking whether you preferred to read EnCompass as a traditional print magazine or online. So far 3,312 replies have been received, and the vast majority—more than 93%—are in favor of the print magazine. It has been very gratifying for the magazine staff to see how strongly so many of you feel about the magazine. Thank you, as always, for your feedback.

Based on the response, rest assured that we have no plans to do away with the print version of EnCompass in the foreseeable future.

A few of the comments:

  • We dread the day when newspapers and magazines are no longer available in print—when we can no longer read in a favorite location in the garden or curled up in a comfortable chair. (Anne G.)
  • After working 10-hour days in front of a computer, the last thing we want to do is read a magazine or book online! (Tom & Joy F.)
  • We save and catalog every issue of EnCompass for future reference … Although strong environmentalists and careful spenders, elimination of the printed edition would be a significant loss for us. (Wilbur G.)
  • A magazine, especially a travel magazine, is meant to be read in an easy chair or on a trip, not on a computer. Please don’t succumb to the trend of online magazines. (Jay R.)
