FINANCIAL

CD laddering for financial success

Certificates of deposit (CDs), can add steady returns to an investment portfolio because they aren’t subject to the ups and downs of the stock market.

To maximize returns, spread your investment among several CDs with a variety of maturity dates. This method is called laddering. How does it work? Let’s use a five-year ladder and $20,000 to invest as an example.

Here, you would have five “rungs” of $4,000 each. For the first rung, you put $4,000 in a one-year CD. For the second rung, you put $4,000 in a two-year CD, continuing on up to $4,000 in a five-year CD. After a year, the one-year CD matures. That means each of the other CDs now are one year closer to maturity (i.e., the two-year CD now matures in one year and the three-year certificate matures in two years).

If you don’t need the money for immediate needs, you take the $4,000 plus earnings from the one-year CD that just matured and roll it over into a new five-year certificate.

With a CD ladder, you’re always replacing the rung with the longest maturity. Because you’re constantly reinvesting, you don’t have to play guessing games about future rates. If interest rates are low one year, you’re only reinvesting a portion of your investment, so you don’t get stuck with an entire portfolio of low-interest CDs.

You can adjust the “length” of your ladder however you want. In a low-rate environment, for example, you may want to keep your ladder short. Perhaps you’d create a one-year ladder with four rungs at three, six, nine and 12 months.

CDs typically come with early withdrawal penalties, so it may make sense to place some cash in a money market account too. You’ll earn competitive yields but will also have access to those funds if necessary, so you don’t need to withdraw the money in your CDs.

Discover Bank offers special rates to AAA members on deposit products like CDs, money market accounts and IRAs. For more information, visit www.AAA.com/financial or call 888-204-8990.

TRAVEL

TripTiks—Delivered your way

Planning a driving trip this summer? AAA wants to help members with their travel needs, from preparing and delivering a customized TripTik to lodging, car rentals and destination information.

TripTiks can be delivered in several ways:

  1. A member can come in to any of our AAA Colorado offices (see page 11) to discuss travel plans with a counselor and have a TripTik prepared there in the office or have it mailed to a member’s address. By choosing this option, members receive personalized help from a travel counselor who takes the time to go over route options, check lodging rates and availability, and recommend places to see and go.
  2. A member can call AAA (877-244-9790 ext. 4910) and order a TripTik for pick up in an office or have it mailed to a members address. By choosing this option, members still receive personalized help from a travel counselor, who will go over route options, offer lodging and car reservations, and review attractions options.
  3. By logging on to www.AAA.com, a member can place an order for delivery to a member’s address. By choosing this option, a member will enter the city and state of each stop on the route, starting with the departure city and state, and the final destination city and state. Stopovers can be added as needed. For example: Denver, Colo., to San Diego, Calif., with stopovers in Green River, Utah., and Las Vegas, Nev. There is also space for a member to add any notes about your trip, such as, specific addresses, attractions interested in visiting, suggested routes, or towing a trailer.
  4. Also, by logging on to www.AAA.com, a member can produce and print a TripTik from their home or office. If you haven’t used the TripTik Travel Planner (TTTP) before, it’s very helpful to view the demo first. The demo will show you how to navigate the TTTP, how to customize routes and maps, how to view places to see, stay and dine, the ability to make lodging reservations, and information on how to customize and print a Travel Guide for many major cities and destinations.

By clicking on the word “preferences,” there is the ability to follow routes that avoid tolls or ferries. By choosing this option, however, the TTTP may add many miles to a route. Please review the route carefully.

By clicking on the word “print,” you will have the option of what size paper you will be using to print the TTTP or create a PDF version.

All TripTiks ordered through AAA Colorado are bound with a binder in book form and are accompanied by a map with an overview of the route highlighted.

Detour and construction details are updated on a frequent basis. If detours and construction are important factors in trip planning, ordering the TTTP closer to a travel date may be beneficial. AAA can also provide highlighted maps for planning purposes.

Allow a minimum of five to seven business days for a TTTP to arrive at a member’s address.

MEMBER SERVICES

$2 billion in savings

AAA discounts, including those available through the Show Your Card & Save program, as well as discounts on hotel stays and automotive repair, saved AAA members more than $2 billion in 2009. Members that used the discounts saved on average $93 during the year, more than the cost of a basic AAA club membership. Sixty-one percent of AAA members utilized AAA discounts on everything from travel and restaurants to home electronics and prescription drugs during the year.

AAA’s savings figures are based on AAA’s Show Your AAA Card & Save Awareness and Usage Study. The survey showed that hotel and motel discounts are the most commonly used AAA discounts, with seven in 10 (69%) members reporting that they have used this type of discount. One-half (51%) of all members have used travel services/product discounts, and approximately one-fourth have obtained discounts for attractions or theme parks tickets (28%) and automotive services (22%).

SAFETY

Choosing a driving school for your teen

Many families take advantage of the summer break to teach their teen to drive. AAA offers the following suggestions on choosing a driving school.

“Test Drive” alternatives
Visit licensed schools in your area. Talk to instructors, sit in on a class, and take a trial lesson, if possible. Also check on polices about refunds, make-up sessions, and contracts.

Price is certainly a factor, but consider the overall value, which includes the quality of instruction, class size, and time behind the wheel.

Evaluate teachers and tools
Colorado approved school must be staffed by licensed instructors. The school’s license must be displayed. Ask the school’s management how often instructors are monitored. Also ask about the individual experience of instructors and the professional development courses they have completed.

The best driving schools will use current texts and a variety of teaching methods including guest speakers.

Evaluate trainer vehicles
Trainer vehicles should be late-model cars in good condition with dual-control brakes for the instructor.

Evaluate instruction
Look for a school that offers a balance of classroom and in-car instruction. A total of 30 classroom hours over four to six weeks is a minimum for new drivers.

Beginners learn best with two, 60- or 90-minute in-car lessons per week. These lessons on the road should follow planned routes that give students experience on residential streets, in city traffic, on rural roads, and on highways and limited-access freeways.

Students should also have the opportunity to master strategies for night driving and driving in limited visibility due to bad weather. Ask instructors how they provide feedback. Ideally, they should evaluate progress after each lesson.

Classroom and in-car lessons should be augmented by practice sessions. Young drivers benefit when the school prepares parents to provide 100 hours of supervised driving experience.

Evaluate reputation
Reputable schools will encourage you to contact customers. Ask clients about their satisfaction with the school.

INSURANCE

It’s hail season

Colorado’s damaging hail season is considered to be from mid-April to mid-August. The Front Range is located in the heart of “Hail Alley,” which receives the highest frequency of large hail in North America and most of the world.

A “catastrophic” hailstorm is defined as one that causes at least $25 million in insured damage. Front Range residents usually can count on three or four catastrophic hailstorms every year. In fact, up to half of your homeowner’s insurance premium may be due to Colorado’s very high risk of hail and wind damage.

If you carry comprehensive auto coverage, hail damage to your vehicle is covered by almost all insurance companies. Although comprehensive coverage is not legally required in Colorado, it is strongly recommended in this very hail-prone state.

When a hailstorm strikes, don’t go outside, even to protect your property. You could be injured.

After the hailstorm, assess the damage. Check your car for dents, and broken or cracked glass. Check trees, shrubs and plants around your house: if they are stripped of their foliage, the hailstorm was heavy enough to damage your roof. You should also check for roof damage if patio covers, screens or soft aluminum roof vents are dented.

If you find damage after the storm, take immediate steps to protect your car or house from further damage. Cover any holes or broken windows, and remove all broken glass. Save receipts for what you spend on these safety measures: you can submit them to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Call your insurance agent to file a claim as soon as you notice damage. After the insurance adjuster has surveyed the hail damage to your property, you can select a reputable repair company and start the repair process.

Be wary of out-of-town roofers who move into an area and set up shop following a storm. While most are reputable, some are con-men who collect money from homeowners and disappear without completing the work. Always choose an established company with good local references, and don’t make final payment until your roof has been inspected and you are satisfied.

For more useful tips on protecting your home from damage and determining what coverage you need, talk to your insurance agent or visit www.AAA.com/insurance.

Student auto skills

The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition is just one of the many ways in which AAA works with the automotive industry and local communities to build awareness of career opportunities in the automotive service industry and to ensure the development of a quality workforce that is equipped to respond to increasingly sophisticated auto repair challenges.

On May 8, 2010, two-person teams from Colorado high schools will compete in the state finals. Teams race against the clock to correctly diagnose and repair a deliberately “bugged” Ford vehicle. A combination of an online exam and hands-on competition scores determine each state’s championship team that will go on to compete in the National Finals on the front lawn of Ford World Headquarters, Dearborn, Mich.

The Student Auto Skills competition identifies and supports the best young auto talent in the country with scholarship opportunities and other prizes. Fulltime automotive technicians have a national mean hourly wage of $16.88 according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2008, the most current data available. The highest 10 percent earned more than $ 28.71 per hour.

AUTOMOTIVE

Summer’s impact on tires and batteries

The number of motorists seeking assistance from AAA for flat tires and batteries traditionally rises during the summer months.

While it can be difficult to avoid an errant nail in a tire, some tire problems can be caught or prevented before motorists hit the road. Regularly check and adjust tire pressures to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended setting. Inspect the tire sidewalls for cuts and bulges, and check the tread for excessive or uneven wear that indicates the need for wheel alignment and/or tire replacement. For maximum life, rotate tires at the mileage intervals specified in the owner’s manual. Don’t forget the spare tire and make sure the it is properly inflated and in good condition.

Many motorists are aware that cold weather can take its toll on automobile batteries, but few realize that summer heat also contributes to battery failure. Summer heat accelerates the rate of corrosion on the vehicle’s battery terminals, which can leave you stranded without warning. To prevent unexpected battery problems ensure that the battery cables are securely attached and keep the battery terminals free of corrosion.

DID YOU KNOW?

A survey by U.S. Market Track found that the average age of AAA members’ vehicles is eight years. For non-members, the average age is slightly higher at nine years.

TRAVEL
COLORADO GEM:

Colorado National Monument

Colorado National Monument, a AAA TourBooks GEM (Great Experience for Members) has begun the countdown to its 100th Anniversary in 2011. The Monument’s Centennial will be commemorated and celebrated throughout 2010 and 2011 with a wide range of public events and special exhibits including the 2010 Ride the Rockies.

Colorado National Monument is reached from Fruita via I-70 exit 19 or Grand Junction via SR 340. This bold, big and brilliantly colored canyon country, with its towering and fascinating rock sculptures, covers 32 square miles of rugged terrain. Rim Rock Drive is one of the grandest scenic drives in the American West and offers both motorists and bicyclists access to 23 miles of breathtaking scenery. The drive also provides access to the visitor center and campground, 19 interpretive viewpoints and 14 hiking trails varying in length from one to 14 miles. The visitor center, near the Fruita entrance, presents cultural and natural history exhibits and a short orientation program.

The Monument is a semi-desert landscape of pinon pines and Utah juniper; low-growing plants and wildflowers grace the area in spring. Backcountry camping requires a permit, available free at the visitor center. AAA TourBooks are free to members. Get this year’s edition at any branch office or at www.AAA.com/travel. For information on Colorado National Monument, visit www.nps.gov/colm or call 970-858-3617, ext 360.

INSURANCE

Can you really save on your insurance by switching?

Turn on the TV or radio any day, and no doubt you will hear an ad from an insurance company saying you will save hundreds of dollars if you switch to them. How can they all be right? And if one company really was the cheapest, wouldn’t everybody use that company?

More and more insurance companies are in the market today claiming they can save you money. The truth is, your individual circumstances affect the price you pay with any insurance company. So where do you start looking?

First, you want to deal with an insurance company that is financially stable. A.M. Best is a rating bureau that assigns grades to insurance companies, with A++ being the highest grade. Any company that rates below B+ should be a concern.

The next issue to consider is whether you are comfortable dealing entirely online with your insurance company. While it’s convenient to pay bills this way, it’s not always a good choice when buying a policy. You may have no opportunity to ask questions. Last year, a major insurance company was fined for not following insurance regulations on how their product was sold online, resulting in many of their customers not having the coverage they needed.

Finally, consider whether or not you want to deal with a “captive agent”—an insurance agent who sells policies from only one insurance company.

You may be better off choosing an independent insurance agent who represents several different insurance companies, so he or she can compare prices and coverage options for you. You should also have the option to talk one-on-one with your insurance agent, whether in person or by phone or email, to make sure you have the right coverage and are getting all the discounts you are eligible to use.

AAA Colorado operates an independent insurance agency—one of the state’s largest specializing in personal lines coverage—and has been writing insurance for over 70 years. Jim Rookard, Director of Insurance Services for AAA Colorado notes, “We’re proud to offer insurance from multiple carriers, all with A.M. Best ratings of A-, or better. The companies we represent exhibit superior financial strength and are able to provide members with the best combinations of price, coverage and service. And, some of our carriers, offer special member pricing.” Auto, home, life, specialty, umbrella policies and long-term care insurance are all available. For more information visit www.AAA.com/insurance or call 800-251-7189.

AUTOMOTIVE

How many tires does AAA change per year?

AAA Colorado came to the aid of more than 280,000 stranded motorists last year. The AAA Colorado call center, located at the Denver headquarters, took an average of 1,624 calls per day.

In 60% of cases throughout 2009, AAA Colorado’s roadside problem-solvers were able to remedy the motorist’s problem and send them on their way. About 113,000 drivers had a vehicle problem that could not be fixed at the roadside and needed a ride in a tow truck.

The second most common service was jump starts and other battery problems, with more than 43,000 requests met in 2009. AAA Colorado also retrieved 41,929 sets of keys locked inside vehicles, changed 31,287 tires, winched 6,196 vehicles out of ditches or other sticky situations, and assisted 4,163 motorists who had run out of fuel.

Your Roadside Assistance Benefits

AAA Colorado’s Roadside Assistance service is the most frequently requested member benefit. In the event of an auto breakdown, here’s what to do and what your coverage includes.

Roadside Assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your membership is not linked to a specific vehicle—you can request roadside assistance for any eligible vehicle you are driving or riding in, even if it’s not yours. The vehicle must be safely reachable from a normally traveled road or established thoroughfare, such as a county-maintained road.

For identification, safety and security purposes, AAA Colorado requests that the member is with the vehicle at the time of disablement, and when the service vehicle arrives. A valid membership card and identification may be required, and benefits are non-transferable.

AAA Roadside Assistance will be provided from the nearest AAA contract facility. If the vehicle cannot be made operable upon providing the services covered by your membership, AAA Colorado will help you find the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, AAA Colorado will assist you in obtaining lodging or alternative transportation.

Requesting Roadside Assistance

By phone: In metro Denver, call 303-753-8800. Elsewhere in Colorado and throughout the United States, call 800-AAA-HELP (800-222-4357).

Online: www.AAA.com, click on Roadside Assistance.

Please have the following information ready:

  • Your name and membership number.
  • The make, model and color of the vehicle.
  • The exact location of the vehicle (a street address, if available).
  • The nature of the trouble—for example a flat tire, won’t start, in ditch, etc.
  • A phone number where you can be reached.

What vehicles are eligible?

Basic/Plus membership — Four-wheeled motor-driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational type (including vans, campers and motor homes), regardless of license plate designation, if services can be safely delivered. Dual-wheel campers/motor homes will be provided all services except towing, extrication/recovery and tire service. Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are provided all services except tire service. Rented passenger and commercial vehicles, except taxis and limousines, are eligible for service.

Plus RV/Motorcycle membership — Motor homes, pickup trucks with campers, travel trailers and motorcycles. Non-travel trailers such as utility, animal, watercraft, lawn equipment, ATV and automobile trailers are not covered.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU CALL FOR SERVICE?

Each primary and associate member is entitled to up to four Roadside Assistance events during their membership year. Members may obviously call for additional assistance, but after four calls the member must pay at the scene or, at AAA Colorado’s discretion, be billed for each additional event.

Please keep in mind that Roadside Assistance should not be used as a substitute for proper vehicle maintenance, and charges may apply to certain services, as explained on page 87. A member who does not pay this bill may become ineligible for benefits and subject his or her membership to cancellation.

Alternate service

If you have followed the procedure to obtain assistance, and AAA Colorado assistance is not available, or AAA Colorado provider access is restricted (such as on toll roads or limited-access highways), AAA Colorado may provide reimbursement for covered services at the prevailing regional commercial rate.

If AAA Colorado assistance was available but not requested, the reimbursement may be limited to the amount AAA Colorado would normally have paid.

To request reimbursement for Roadside Assistance, submit the original receipt to AAA Colorado within 90 days of service. AAA Colorado may adjust or deny reimbursement for service provided by individuals or companies not normally engaged in providing roadside assistance for AAA organizations.

Roadside Assistance Services

When you call for assistance, the following services will be provided to place your vehicle in a drivable condition. If these attempts are unsuccessful after a reasonable effort by the service provider, the towing service provision will apply.

Services beyond the benefits listed below will be charged the prevailing hourly or mileage rate of the contractor in that geographic area—if this is necessary, your personal check for up to $250 will be accepted by any independent contract facility providing Roadside Assistance or repairs for AAA members. A valid membership card and identification must be presented at the time of payment, and the name on the check must match the member name. Please note that snow removal is not a service offered by AAA Colorado.

Mechanical Adjustments: An attempt may be made to get your vehicle operational.

Jump Start: An attempt will be made to jump start the disabled vehicle.

Flat Tire Change: Your spare tire will be installed to enable the vehicle to be driven.

Fuel Delivery: Fuel will be delivered to the vehicle at current pump prices (for AAA Basic members) or free of charge (for AAA Plus and Plus/RV members). Enough fuel will be delivered to enable the vehicle to reach the nearest open service station. Specific brands or octane ratings cannot be promised. Priming of diesel vehicles is not included.

Lockout Service: If keys are locked inside the vehicle, the service provider will attempt to gain entry.

Locksmith Service: If the ignition key to the vehicle is lost or broken, the locksmith will attempt to make a replacement key. Coverage is for the first $50 of locksmith services for AAA Basic members, and the first $100 of locksmith services for AAA Plus and Plus/RV members. Costs beyond this coverage will be at the member’s expense, payable at time of service.

Extricating/Winching: For AAA Basic members, AAA will cover extricating/winching service including one truck and operator at the scene of disablement. For AAA Plus and Plus/RV members, the services of a second truck and operator at the scene of disablement are covered for up to one hour if necessary.

Towing: AAA contractors will tow an eligible vehicle four miles for AAA Basic members, or 100 miles for AAA Plus members, in any direction from the point of disablement or back to the responding facility, free of charge. Additional mileage charges will be at the member’s expense, payable at the time of service, based on the contractor’s rate per mile in the geographic area.

GET THE MEMBERSHIP GUIDE

A glovebox-sized membership guide outlining AAA Colorado’s Roadside Assistance policies and all other member benefits is available at all AAA Colorado offices (see page 11 for locations) or download it from www.AAA.com/automotive (look for the Membership Guide).

Expanded battery service

AAA Colorado has expanded its popular Battery Assist service to include Longmont, Erie, Superior, Lafayette, Louisville, and, most recently, Pueblo County. Battery Assist is also available in the Denver Metro area, Boulder, and Colorado Springs.

Last year, AAA battery service providers replaced more than 7,000 car batteries in Colorado. Service technicians use state-of-the-art hand-held diagnostic equipment that is capable of analyzing and testing the vehicle’s battery and charging system at the roadside. Technicians can also check for other problems in the vehicle’s electrical system that might be causing battery related issues.

If a battery is found in need of replacement, service providers carry a wide variety of AAA-branded batteries that fit most vehicles. Members can purchase the battery at a discounted rate and have it installed right then and there—no need for a jump start or tow to a repair facility. All of AAA’s batteries come with a nationwide six-year pro-rated warranty, with full, free replacement the first three years.

The recent expansion of service in Pueblo County brings not only a quality battery service provider, but a quality roadside assistance service provider. Mick and Tammy Stine, owners of Auto Towing, Inc., have been serving AAA members in the Colorado Springs area for the past 11 years and have brought their quality service to Pueblo County. AAA Colorado and Auto Towing, Inc., share the same passion—providing members safety, security, and peace of mind through exceptional customer service.

AAA Colorado is proud to able to offer the unique and popular service of Battery Assist to more of its members and is looking for additional expansion opportunities in 2010.
