I would like to express my feelings about your article “Safe driving and your hearing” [Jul/Aug]. I find it very offensive to the deaf community.
The article says “The ability to hear properly greatly impacts your ability to drive safely.” Would you like us to stop driving? What do you say to all the people who don’t hear sirens, warning signals and horns because their music is too loud or they are too distracted talking on their cell phones?
Since AAA finds the deaf community such dangerous drivers, we should take our business elsewhere.
—Joyce, Lakewood
Editor’s note: We’re very sorry that we caused offense. The intention was not to portray deaf people as dangerous drivers, but to bring attention to a risk factor that is avoidable for some drivers.
Non-deaf drivers who are distracted by loud music or cell phones take an avoidable risk. Just as we mention this type of risk in the magazine, the article about hearing loss addressed another risk factor that some drivers might not have considered. A driver with correctable hearing loss may want to take steps to minimize their driving risk, if their particular situation means there are options available to help.
All drivers accept a certain amount of risk when driving and AAA’s goal is to help all drivers improve their safety on the road, within their individual physical abilities.
This is a little late, but I wanted to compliment you on the big May/June issue. The travel articles all happened to be particularly interesting to me, and I liked the practical tips. Thanks and keep up the good work.

As a business owner in Estes Park, I am always pleased to see favorable stories on our town, but the article in the July/August issue (Loop Drives from Estes Park) is likely to confuse visitors. More than once, the writer refers to “Main Street.” Estes Park doesn’t have one. Our main thoroughfare is called Elkhorn Avenue.

In the Santa Fe article in the May/June issue [page 43], there was a picture of women shopping at a market in Santa Fe. I have had four people show me the picture, or call to say that is a picture of me! I am pretty sure it is me, but the person in the photo is wearing a bracelet that I don’t have or remember borrowing. Thank you for my 15 minutes of fame! Great magazine, by the way.
