Fly versus drive

Right now would be a perfect time for AAA to start pushing “take the high road” type of advertising campaign because of the big wave of people choosing to drive vs. fly because of the naked body scanner and invasive pat-downs with airports. I know four people who just canceled their flights and are driving to Las Vegas in protest. If you advertised AAA membership now and mentioned how fun it is to drive to a destination, you would pick up some new members.

No natural silence

There is no true natural silence in Rocky Mountain, Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Black Canyon parks due to the constant air traffic. These are transcontinental flights at 35,000 to 40,000 feet whose thunder is clearly audible on the ground. Natural sounds are subtle and easily drowned out. Once enough concerned folks get together, the solution will come through pressure on the government aviation authorities.

Oil-free beaches

(Following up on our article in the previous issue, Florida Beaches: Oil-Free and Open)

The media continue to report inaccurate information that is disheartening to all of us who live on the beautiful “oil free” Gulf Coast. Please visit www.resortquestnwfl.com to see pictures of our coast from Gulf Shores, Alabama, to Panama City Beach, Florida.

We have suffered severely from the publishing of information by various media portraying our area as devastated with oil. We lost approximately 50% of our tourism due to this misreporting of information. The Fort Walton Beach and Destin area have had little to no oil on our beaches. There were a couple of hours one day in June when a few tar balls rolled up onto our beach, but they were immediately removed. However, media portrayed us as having oil everywhere. This caused many tourists to go elsewhere rather than come to our beaches. We looked out on our incredibly beautiful white, sugary sand beach with emerald green waters and saw very few people enjoying the splendor. Visit our website www.breakersfwb.com and click on our beach cam. This will show you that our beach is as pristine as it ever was, and will continue to be.

Correction

Our article Winter Fun at Guest Ranches in the November/December edition mentioned the Fairplay Nordic Center. AAA member V. Nichols informs us the center is closed. The online version of the article has been updated.
