Safe Roads: 47 seconds

Forty-seven seconds is all the time it takes a car thief to make your car his. And if it’s happened to you, or someone you know, you’ll understand the fear, anger and frustration involved.

More than 12,000 vehicles are stolen each year in Colorado, a crime wave that all of us pay for through higher car insurance premiums.

And it’s not just newer models or expensive automobiles that make you a tempting target. It’s opportunity that an auto thief looks for: things like an unlocked door, a car that’s been left running and unattended (even if it’s locked), spare keys, or cars parked in poorly lit, less-traveled areas.

Help prevent auto theft and higher insurance costs for everyone by following these tips:

  • Do not leave your car while warming it up on cold mornings, at the gas stations or convenience store, while dropping off the kids at day-care, etc. If a law enforcement officer spots it, you could receive a fine. (Colorado Revised Statute 42-2-1206.)
  • Never leave any keys in the car, not even a spare set. Never give your ignition key to anyone except a valet, attendant or mechanic.
  • Lock your vehicle, no matter where you are.
  • Always park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
  • Keep your title someplace safe and secure. Personal information left in a stolen vehicle can result in a stolen identity.
  • Carry your registration in your purse or wallet. If your vehicle is stolen, you will have the necessary reporting information, and the thief won’t know your name and address.
