AAA’s rare Four and Five Diamond designations are now held by 39 lodging properties and 23 restaurants in Colorado.

The Five Diamond hotels include three longtime award-winners—The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs (35 years), Little Nell in Aspen (20 years), the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek (six years)—and 2011’s addition, The Ritz-Carlton in downtown Denver.

The Penrose Room in the Broadmoor received its fourth Five Diamond restaurant rating. The 35 lodgings and 22 restaurants with Four Diamond ratings are listed below.

Each year, AAA evaluates more than 60,000 lodgings, campgrounds, restaurants and attractions throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, a practice it began in 1937. The unannounced inspections of lodgings and restaurants scrutinize such areas as cleanliness, safety, ambiance, amenities and service. Diamond ratings of lodging began in 1976, and restaurants in 1986. Nationwide, only 0.3 percent of the total 59,000 AAA Approved and Diamond Rated lodgings and restaurants achieve a Five Diamond rating.

Travelers can access AAA’s Diamond Ratings and Inspector Notes in the printed TourBook guides, eTourBook guides and online at www.AAA.com using the searchable listings, TripTik Travel Planner or AAA Mobile Web. Members with an Apple iPhone can access AAA’s travel information on the go with the free AAA TripTik Mobile app, which uses GPS technology to display AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants near a user’s location.

AAA on Facebook

Did you know AAA has a Facebook page? The national site for AAA on Facebook is AAAFanPage. However, if you have a comment or question that you’d like answered by a local AAA Colorado staff member, check out AAA Colorado’s private group on Facebook. Just search for “AAA Colorado” from the Facebook search bar. The private group is managed by the same team at AAA Colorado that brings you EnCompass. We’re not online 24/7, so any emergencies or roadside assistance requests should still be directed to 800-AAA-HELP or www.AAA.com as usual—but for anything else, we’d love to hear from you!

AAA Member Rewards card

The new AAA Member Rewards Visa credit card lets you earn points that can be redeemed for vouchers toward everything AAA sells—from travel and membership to luggage and automotive products, including work done at Approved Auto Repair facilities. Or simply redeem your points for cash.

Card holders earn:

  • 3 points for a AAA purchase
  • 2 points on gas, grocery and pharmacy purchases
  • 1 point on any other item purchased
  • 2,500 bonus points for the first purchase within 90 days of receiving the new card

Approved Auto Repair and discounts

What does it mean when an auto repair facility is AAA-approved? Each facility undergoes a lengthy inspection of everything from the company’s financial records, to customer complaints, to the technicians’ training levels, to the cleanliness of the premises. Customer satisfaction must also meet AAA standards. Each shop surveys its customers throughout the contract year, and each shop is re-inspected annually. Should any problems arise, AAA is available to investigate and mediate disputes.

Not every repair facility or body shop gives a AAA member discount because discounting is not a requirement for approval. Shops that offer discounts are marked with a Show Your Card & Save logo in the print version of the magazine.

Android Roadside app

The AAA Roadside app, now available for Android phones, makes it easy to request roadside assistance with one click, sending your location to the AAA dispatcher and letting you enter details of the problem. It even displays an electronic version of your membership card. A new feature that’s been added is the Battery Quote Calculator that instantly provides you with pricing on replacement batteries offered through AAA’s Mobile Battery Service.
