New Colorado Explorer design

Your Jan/Feb 2011 Colorado Explorer article on downtown Denver was great. My husband and I spend a get-away weekend downtown Denver every year and now we have some interesting additional venues to check out.

Where’s my Mini Tour?

As 25-year members of AAA Colorado, we have enjoyed the EnCompass magazine in its various versions. It is one of the few magazines we receive that we go through cover to cover. Our favorite section is the Colorado Mini Tour. We’ve taken many of these recommended trips over the years. Unfortunately, it seems to have disappeared in the January/February 2011 issue of EnCompass. I understand you have to promote the travel agency piece of AAA’s business, but please don’t do it at the expense of highlighting road trips of our great state.

If your plan is to not include the Mini Tour, EnCompass will become another one of those magazines we throw in the corner, unread, for a few months and than take to the recycling bin. –A. Ratkewicz, Colorado Springs

Editor’s response:
The Mini Tour took a brief hiatus, and returns this issue.

Ink, paper and the planet

Just received and looked over the new EnCompass. A significant amount of the content was good, including the article on travel photography.

However, I am still very disappointed as a very long-term AAA member (33 years) with the failure of AAA Colorado to join the 20th century when it comes to the paper and inks used in printing EnCompass. There is absolutely no indication that recycled paper with a high post-consumer waste content or paper from sustainable practices, or low-impact inks are used in the production of this magazine. There is a constantly increasing list of trade and other publications I receive that show this level of responsibility to the environment and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle. Where is AAA Colorado? Apparently nowhere when it comes to environmental stewardship regarding its publications.

Editor’s response:
Like all AAA Colorado members, we love the beauty of our home state. That’s one factor which guides our thinking about the ink, paper and printing services we use to produce EnCompass. AAA Colorado looks to partner with suppliers that focus on a 360-degree approach and measurement of environmental performance. By partnering with these suppliers, not only are we focusing on ink and fiber, but other key environmental performance criteria such as air emissions, waste generation, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Ink: EnCompass is printed with ink that contains 27.3% by weight, renewable resource. This percentage includes a combination of soy, corn and linseed oil (7.9%) and pine resin.
  • Paper: Our paper supplier is a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper merchant. FSC, along with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), focus on sustainable forestry management practices. The paper we use is certified by PEFC as coming from sustainably managed forests.
  • Digital edition: For AAA members who prefer receiving EnCompass by other means, the magazine can be read online at www.encompassmag.com. To opt out of receiving the print version, call AAA Colorado’s membership department, 303-753-8800 ext. 8150, or email editor@colorado.aaa.com and we will update our mailing list the same day. (Because mailing labels are printed in advance for each issue, it may sometimes take one additional copy of the magazine before you stop receiving it.)
